8. How to Adjust the Volume on Every Device in Your Home
What you will do
Different devices in your home have their own volume controls. We will show you where to find them on phones, tablets, televisions, and smart speakers. After this tutorial, you will be able to adjust the volume quickly on any device you use.
Before you start
- Have your phone, tablet, TV remote, or smart speaker nearby.
- Make sure the device is turned on.
Step by step
On your smartphone or tablet
- Press the volume button on the side of your device. You will see a volume bar appear on the screen.
- Press the top button to make the volume louder. Press the bottom button to make it quieter.
- Wait for the volume bar to disappear. The volume has been saved when the bar goes away.
On your television
- Pick up your TV remote. Look for two buttons marked with plus (+) and minus (−) symbols.
- Press the plus button to make the volume louder. Press the minus button to make it quieter.
- Look at the TV screen to see the volume number change. Stop adjusting when the volume feels right to you.
On your smart speaker (Alexa, Google Home)
- Look for the volume control buttons on the top of your speaker. Most smart speakers have a plus (+) button and a minus (−) button.
- Press the plus button to increase the volume. Press the minus button to decrease it.
- Listen to hear the volume change. Your speaker may beep when you reach maximum or minimum volume.
Trouble?
- I cannot find the volume buttons on my device. Check the sides or top of your device, and look for + and − symbols or look in the Settings menu.
- The volume changed but I cannot hear a difference. Make sure the device is not muted by checking if a mute icon appears on your screen.
- My device is stuck on low volume. Check if a volume limit has been set in Settings > Sound and adjust it.
- Made a mistake? You can press the volume button again to fix it right away. Nothing will be deleted.
Common questions
- Will adjusting the volume on my phone affect the volume on my TV? No. Each device has its own separate volume control. Changing one will not change the others.
- What if my device is muted? Look for a mute icon (usually a speaker with a line through it) on your screen. Tap it to unmute your device, then adjust the volume.
- Can I set the volume higher or lower than the buttons allow? Some devices let you set a maximum volume in Settings to protect your hearing. You can change this in the Sound or Audio menu.
